The previously existed duality in the development of the system of metrological support of measurements of gas flow rate, its operation and improvement currently are discussed. The analysis of measurement units of gas flow rate is given and the advantages of flow measurement in units of mass flow and reproduction of its size on the reference standards of gas flow rate units in order to transfer to subordinate measuring instruments are shown.
