Calcium sulfonate-based greases, owing to their outstanding performance properties, are used in critical friction units operating under severe conditions - at elevated temperatures, loads and water contamination. The trends of the global and domestic grease markets are reviewed; they forecast a steady growth in demand for materials of this type, driven by the high volatility of lithium raw-material prices and by stricter requirements for grease quality and durability. The advantages of calcium sulfonate greases are analysed - high thermal stability, water resistance, adhesion, protective and antiwear properties - along with the features that limit their application, particularly at low temperatures. It is shown that the specific performance characteristics result from the particular structural framework formed by calcite micelles stabilised by calcium sulfonate. The main areas of application of greases of this type are described - in metallurgy, pulp-and-paper production, marine transport, mining, oil, food, and other industries. Using the example of the Rosneft Plastex CaS WR product line, developed and manufactured from domestic feedstock, the possibilities of successful replacement of imported analogues in the Russian market are demonstrated. The results of a comparative analysis of performance characteristics are presented, confirming the comparability and, for a number of indicators, the superiority of the developed greases over foreign analogues. It is noted that the production of greases of this type can be organised on the basis of commercially available domestic sulfonate additives, while positive feedback from end users confirms the high quality of the developed products.
