STUDYING WATER DEMANGANATION FROM SURFACE SOURCES BY SORPTION
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
Surface water contains manganese compounds, with concentrations ranging from 1-200 mg/L. Manganese is most commonly found in groundwater. In surface water, manganese concentrations are significantly lower. Manganese is present in natural waters as ions. In drinking water, the manganese ion content should be greater than 10-4 g/L. Demanganization of natural waters is accomplished by chemical, physicochemical, and biological methods (oxidation, sorption, ion exchange, biochemical degradation). A sorption method for manganese removal using pressure filters loaded with activated carbon has been proposed at the Kazan State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The aim of this research is to study demanganization processes in adsorption pressure filters loaded with activated carbon. The objective of this research is to identify optimal process parameters (flow rate, contact time with the filter media, and pressure loss). A methodology for experimental studies of natural water demanganization using adsorption filters has been developed. The results of the experiments showed that water demanganization by sorption can be recommended for source water manganese levels no higher than 0.3-0.4 mg/L. BAU brand activated carbon is recommended as the sorbent. The water filtration rate through the sorbent should be between 6-7 m/h. Water undergoing demanganization should be treated for 17-20 minutes. The excess water pressure entering the sorption filter should be between 0.2-0.3 MPa. Thus, water demanganization by sorption is quite applicable for natural water treatment. The authors recommend this method for implementation in water treatment technology.
