The three genera of Enterobacteriaceae bacteria - Proteus, Morganella, Providencia were identified by microbiological and molecular-biological methods. Extracellular and intracellular proteolytic activities of these strains were investigated with the use of various protein substrates. Proteus mirabilis has high extracellular proteolytic activity. Intracellular proteases cleaving gelatine were found in Morganella and Providencia cell extracts.
