Thermal decomposition of polyurethanes accompanied by the release of carbon dioxide due to the formation of polyurethanes isocyanate fragments when heated. Isocyanate groups interact with each other to form a carbodiimide fragments and carbon dioxide. Formation of carbon dioxide detected by infrared spectroscopy. Formation of carbodiimides inhibited by phenolic compounds.
