The kinetics of water drops spreading on a natural leather surface (a split leather, a nubuck and a split velour) is investigated. It is shown that the microstructure of a leather surface in conditions of its structural elements hydrophily defines a wetting mode and duration of the induction period upon transition from heterogeneous to homogeneous wetting. Morphological features of nap leather don't provide steady hydrophobic properties that require drawing a high effective water repellent.
