The paper provides an overview of linguistic difficulties in scientific writing, both lexical and grammatical, focusing on the importance of functional approach to English grammar studies. Negative and positive influences of mother tongue on English scientific writing are highlighted. It is obvious that courses of English for Academic and Specific Purposes are the call of the day in technical universities.
