Comparative bioinformatic genome analysis of Serratia marcescens, Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium revealed that, similar to E.coli, the genome of S. marcencens harbors genes for сatalases KatE and KatG, but not KatN. However, in contrast to E.coli, the peroxidase AhpC gene is absent from S. marcescens genome and has apparently been replaced by a putative homolog of S. Typhimurium peroxidase TsaA. Different strains of S.marcescens were tested for sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide. A restrictionless mutant strain lacking nuclease activity was found to display an elevated level of H2O2 sensitivity.
